Governor Greg Abbott of Texas formally registered to run for reelection on Tuesday, putting him in the running for what is shaping up to be one of the most high-profile races in the country in 2022

Beto O’Rourke, a former Texas congressman who campaigned for the US Senate in 2018 and the Democratic presidential candidate in 2020 but lost both times, declared his candidacy for governor of Texas in early April.

Many Democrats in the state saw O’Rourke as their best hope for denying Abbott a third term in office, and his campaign quickly gained national attention.

The affair, along with several other issues coming from Abbott’s attempts to limit abortion and eliminate government vaccination mandates, has prompted Democrats in Texas to claim that the governor has been politically wounded.

While Democrats have made significant strides in recent years, turning Texas blue in a statewide race remains a difficult task, particularly in light of President Joe Biden’s declining approval ratings, which have energized Republicans who hope to run against him to gain seats in Congress and statehouses across the country.
