The Impossible Task Of Apologizing For Everything That Has Ever Happened
History has seen the most terrible things, but it’s impossible to rectify everything
Over the past few years, the popularity among certain groups of forcing apologies over past events is growing. A good example is the mass apology about the history of slavery. There is something to be said for this but there are, of course, also things that go too far.
Thus, there will never be a Russian leader who will apologize to the victims of communism in the Soviet Union. This is and has been one of the most deadly ideologies in history.
Putting things in perspective
Maybe we should put things in perspective a bit before we start judging and drawing conclusions from this. Times have changed and in some ways that is a good thing.
That is not to say that you can judge every point in history as if it were taking place now, because that is what a lot of people do. They take any bad moment in history and look at it with current standards and values.
That’s not how it works, of course. That doesn’t give a fair assessment of the situation, you have to look at it in perspective.
